James H. Bush, PQS, LEED AP
Mr. Bush completed Registration as a Professional Quantity Surveyor in Auckland, New Zealand 1980 after an intensive five-year work/study cadetship. He completed a seven-year study course within five years to become one of the youngest Registered Quantity Surveyors in New Zealand at that time.
Mr. Bush immigrated to Canada in 1984 and initially worked for the large Toronto based general contracting firm of Milne & Nicholls Ltd., where he was introduced in the intricacies of the Canadian construction industry. Other general contracting experience includes a nine month period in 1987 with Jarrett Construction as Senior Estimator / Project Manager in Toronto.
Following his move to Vancouver BC in 1988, Mr. Bush held the position of Chief Estimator with Hanscomb Consultants Inc. Vancouver from July 1988 to July 1994. He initially started with Hanscomb in 1985 in the Toronto office, where he was job captain on numerous projects including the US$160.0 million Liberty Place Project in Philadelphia and the $120.0 million Hospital for Sick Children. Since moving to Vancouver in 1988 he has continued working on major projects, which include the $90.0 million Disease Control Centre in Winnipeg and a US$200.0 million Hotel, Casino, Parkade Project in Reno, Nevada. He has undertaken projects as far a field a New Delhi, India and U.A.E., maintaining excellent bid results.
In June 1994, Mr. Bush set up the company of James Bush & Associates (JBA), as a firm dedicated to providing clients with a personal, professional service. JBA|QS has thrived in these last twenty plus years and has gained a reputation for good honest service and excellent results.
With over 1200 projects on the books, ranging from small renovations of $100,000 to large mega projects in the $700 million range, JBA|QS is routinely handling projects in the $10million to $50million range. JBA|QS has adapted to these changing project types by being fully computerized, utilizing specially developed take off and estimating software.
JBA|QS has concentrated service delivery in the Cost Consulting field, rather than Project Management or Mortgage Monitoring. Recent interest in Green Buildings has seen Mr. Bush become a LEED Accredited Professional and has been able to work on a number of significant green building projects in the last 27 years. Projects include Canada’s first LEED Platinum certification on the Gulf Islands Operations Centre in Sidney, BC.. Current list of LEED certified project includes approximately 150 projects, from Schools, University Buildings, Community Centre, Rental Housing, Retail and Warehousing, As part of our Green Building service, JBA provides Value Analysis and Life Cycle Costing as integral to the cost consulting role.
Jim’s pursuits outside of work activities include world travel, cooking, barbeque/smoking, motorcycle touring, collecting and restoring classic British & Italian motorcycles.
